Engine Lineage Without Mythology

A cam cover is a small place to put a complicated history. A badge might name a manufacturer, a development department or the person who assembled the engine. Those are three different contributions, and all can be worth understanding.

Start with the Porsche family tree. A change of engine family does not mean every useful idea from motorsport disappeared with the old name. Follow that with AMG's assembly practice: the signature belongs to a person, but that person's work takes place inside a modern production system.

The American E36 M3 asks another question. If an engine shares ancestry with an ordinary production model, does that settle how we should regard the finished car? Its actual specification and its audience make a better starting point than badge anxiety.

These connections are invitations to compare decisions, not claims that different engines share hardware. Each piece follows a particular car, period or process. Where we still need an original record or an owner's experience, the question stays open.
